General Assembly: "Institutional Psychiatry Act"

Post  Cool Egg Sandwich on Tue Mar 08, 2011 2:30 am

Here is where we will debate the current WA General Assembly Resolution: "Institutional Psychiatry Act."

This resolution essentially guarantees certain rights for persons within institutional psychiatric facilities.

A link to the resolution can be found Here.

As well, a link to the debate in the General Assembly forums can be found Here.

Also attached is a poll question which will serve to determine my Delegate vote for this resolution.

With that, I will cede the floor to your arguments For/Against this resolution.

Rgds.,

Overall I am for this resolution, however I believe that certain caveats should be added.

For instance the sugested bill needs to take in account the saftey of not only the patients but those working with said patients. Example: a situation that arises frequently is the question of seditives. It may not be medically necessary for the treatment of a patient but not using them in certain situations may pose threats on the doctors and attendants.

Also the question of the criminaly insane. Revoking certain freedoms as form of punishment is an extremely effective deterrent of future problems. And while visitation may not be expressly forbiden by a court it may serve as a catalyst for numerous problems, especially when the complicity in the crime committed crimes does not unquestionally lie only on the committed, a determination that a psychiatrists may very well be able to make where the court was not aware of a possible problem.
