I'm not opposed to the formation of parties, I think they can be great fun, when people in those parties actually argue and debate for what they believe. When that stops the fun dies.

Well the whole idea of a political party is that like-minded individuals form together to increase their strength in the government through numbers and block voting...

so of course members of a political party are going to 95% of the time vote with their party members...

also i wouldnt fore see to much debate as they all agree on most things anyways,

and usually when people disagree on things they break off and form their own party...because it seems to be the human condition to distance yourself from all that is different then you...which is why political parties form in the first place.

Whether or not we want political parties. What can you do to stop someone from starting one? (rhetorical question) I think it is a necessary political consequence that accompanies a democracy.

yea, you are correct, i think that was what everyone kind of came to a concensious to.

however there is a difference between 'formal' political parties, and 'informal' political parties.

I say, idr if this was already touched upon, that we include in the constitution that a certain # of ppl must sign a petition to start a political party and a certain # of ppl must remain 'active' in that party for it to stay a 'formal' political party and I very much am opposed to the idea of 'informal' political parties having rights to a spot on the forum.

We have touched on that.

i suggested that we have the constitution remain silent on the issue of political parties all together, as a constitution should be apolitical.

then the Assembly can pass legislation dealing with the formations of political parties as they wish.

Hey guys, sorry I'm so late to this debate - I was out of town for a couple of days. I'll keep it short and just say that I agree with the consensus of the thread. Political parties are good, but should have a minimum number of members in order to be officially recognized (although nations could always agree to vote together on an issue behind closed doors without making a formal alliance). With that said, like Cool Egg, I don't know that I'd be quick to join up with any party unless they made an excellent case in favour of my political leanings.

Glad to see you back, dude. Better late, than never I suppose, right? In any event, thanks for participating in the debates the best you can, it is greatly appreciated... Wink

Rgds.,

Without much insight into others' posts, I'd say a 2 House system

Make it like the US Congress, except more options for "voters' to elect.

25 people in a "senate"?
Maybe for a House of Reps though, have everyone endorse like 5-10 people, and communicate with them for ideas.

That way the Senate can vote on things they think are good for the Dirty South, but must be approved by the HoR to be passed onto a President.

Also, if political parties, limit the number

For fairness and efficiency, we have essentially decided to go with a unicameral system [one house]. For starters, I mentioned previously in response to another one of your posts that our regional participation isn't incredibly high, so we need something that can function easily. A single legislative body is also incredibly fair; there is no "upper house" that has more influence or political power: everyone in the Assembly has equal vote.

Does this seem like a fair system to you?
